Pre-Fabricated Method
STEP 1. Determine where a structural stud is on each side
of the window, by confirming with a pilot hole. Click here to download a diagram of a typical window framing.

STEP 2. Measure the distance between the pilot holes that will be used to support the box. On a work bench or table, clamp the brackets the measured distance apart, parallel and square.
STEP 3. With the brackets spread to match the pilot hole dimension cut a facia that will extend past
the structural bracket with a mitered cut. (Note - a mitered cut is not required for the most simple
designs, if you intend to cover this with a 2x12 or 2ea 2x6 and then with lath and plaster or a siding
material the mitered cut is not necessary. A side panel is not required, but in this example we will
have a box with matching sides.)
STEP 4. Line the bracket up with the mitered cut, mark the
hole pattern, drill a small pilot hole for each of the 1 1⁄2” lag
bolts provided (8ea), don’t go all the way through your facia
with your pilot hole.
STEP 5. To allow you to attach an end panel, drill 6 to
8 spaced holes in the gusset of the bracket, use short
galvanized deck screws to attach your dimensional lumber.
STEP 6. Mount the brackets to the facia.
STEP 7. Mount the end panels.
STEP 8. Install any finish the mind can conceive. In this case, wood molding. But it could be roofing
shingles, siding, decorative concrete molding, stamped metal, copper, polished stone, lath and
plaster, tile. A whiskey barrel portion or the weathered remains of the stern of a skiff can be fastened
to this substructure.
STEP 9. Mount the partially completed box. One
person can install the box by lag bolting the box one
end at a time.
Step 10. Install the bottom, suggest 2x dimensional
lumber, suitable for the expected conditions. They lay
flat on the flanges of the supporting brackets.

Step 11. Install a back. Usually 3⁄4” plywood is suitable.
It rests on the bottom flange of the support bracket and
leans against the back. The soil will keep it in place
when it’s filled.
Step 12. Line the back and then the front with aluminum or galvanized rolled flashing, lapping the bottom, staple or screw to hold in place.
Step 13. Cover the top edge of the exposed plywood with 1x2 roof edge flashing and attach with a screw.
Step 14. Fill it with teenagers to show how remarkably strong your work is! |
